Artist Statement
I have always loved color and art. As a child I lived in Costa Rica and Argentina and was influenced by the culture and colors I saw there. We only attended school half days there and I filled my afternoons taking piano lessons and walking through the city, absorbing my surroundings. Playing piano led me into my college career, as I received scholarships for music. During college I became aware or could verbalize that I have mild synesthesia, where I can “see” the colors of music. I also visualize the days of the week and months as chunks of time with specific colors and shapes.
I began my career in Interior Design but recently changed to teaching math, science, English and history to students in their homes and art to adults with disabilities. Incorporating my gifts into my own life helps give me unique perspective in working with others.
I work on canvas, either on my front porch off of Semmes Avenue or locked up in my bedroom, with drop cloths on the bed and floor. Sometimes I throw paint, sometimes I paint to the rhythm of music and sometimes, tired of not finding the right brush size, I paint with my hands. My figurative work often focuses on women's issues including self-image, motherhood and pregnancy.
I've only begun painting for public viewing in the last 2 years. It's been an intimidating journey to put myself “out there” for others to see, judge and hopefully enjoy. I paint because I love it, I need to! It is the most freeing thing I've discovered as it instantly captures my emotions and reactions. I want you to feel something from my pieces as this is my way of connecting with you. Enjoy.
